Traveling this summer? Or not? Regardless, you can enjoy a remarkable
adventure through books. In community. And with prizes!
Truth is, most human beings have a love-hate relationship with travel.
The love? Well, there can be a lot of it. New experiences. New food. Connecting with friends and family. The energy of movement. The electricity of big cities. The lure of off-the-beaten path locales and moments. The wonder of nature. The opportunity to break away from routine.
The hate? Sometimes it's these exact same items: new experiences, new food, friend and, especially, family. The hassle of moving through airports, layovers, delayed baggage, tight economy seating, loud cities, pollution, getting lost, getting robbed, not having a routine.
We humans are a varied, often conflicted, lot!
But there's a very simple way you – together with your child(ren), if you wish – can travel this summer. And it's practically free!
Join the #ReadAroundtheWorld Challenge!
What is this?
Two weeks of intentionally exploring the world through books! Very simple. Very straightforward. And yes, low cost.
Here are the specifics:
1 | The #ReadAroundtheWorld Challenge runs from July 1–14, 2019.
2 | There are two ways to do this challenge. One is to read to your younger child(ren). The other is to do this individually, on your own.
3 | Read any book(s) you'd like! The bottom line: It must be about another culture, a different way of life, something way outside your current experience.
4 | If you read to your younger children, the goal is a single picture book each day.
5 | If you are reading on your own, the goal is at least 20 minutes or 20 pages of reading each day.
6 | Get your book(s) at your local library, support your local bookstore, or find book(s) on Amazon. Heck, you might even dust off a few currently sitting unread on one of your bookshelves!
7 | You report in every day for this challenge either in the dedicated Facebook group (posting a video up to 60 seconds long) OR through the iOS-based SPAR app (more on this below).
8 | When you enroll in this challenge, you receive our #ReadAroundtheWorld Reading Resources ebook to download. This ebook offers dozens of suggestions of cross-cultural books for all levels of readers.
9 | If you successfully complete the challenge, you are automatically enrolled in a drawing for a $50 Amazon card as well as several other smaller prizes.
Why do I do this? Let us count the ways….
Join the #ReadAroundTheWorld Challenge and….
- Have fun! Yes, you can!
- Develop (or reignite) a regular reading habit.
- Bond with your young child.
- Discover new lands, new people, new ways of thinking!
- Do this in community. You can share your "travel" experience with others!
- Get our Reading Resources ebook for free, and keep up with other opportunities to expand your mind.
- Get the chance to win prizes!
A final word
Books offer us a portal into another world. This is true of almost any book because not only do we get exposed to new ideas, but we also get exposed to the author's mind and way of thinking.
Books where we actually learn about another way of life, another culture, a story unlike our own cause the neurons in our brain to fire like crazy, in dynamic ways! Worlds can come alive when we do this.
And, for our young children, the effects are exponential. We are helping them gain vocabulary, learn about the big, wide world we live in (albeit in a simplified form) and are stoking their creativity as well.
SPAR is an iOS-based app you can learn more about here.
If you participate this way, you will be eligible to also make money through the app as long as you participate successfully in the challenge. No missed days means at least a few pennies (or much more) go into your pocket, just for doing something good for you (and possibly your child).
You do not need to participate using SPAR. Rather, you can check in through the #ReadAroundtheWorld Facebook group if you prefer.
