We're making some important changes to YourGlobalFamily over the next six months. Here's what's coming up!
I’ve been thinking about this article for some time now, but finally have the clarity to write it.
Things will be changing here at YourGlobalFamily (again!), and here’s how:
Our blog posts will get shorter, starting with this one!
We’ll try our best to provide you actionable content (often with story) in bite-sized chunks.
We will start posting twice/week (M, Th), up from once/week.
If you’re on our email list, you will still hear from me just once/week.
Each blog post will soon have an audio option to go with it; this will be a new on-the-go way of catching what we have to say.
We will frequently run series – two or more sequential posts centered around a specific subject.
We will do more interviews and invite more relevant guest posts.
Basically, what it comes down to is this: We are writing to an especially busy group of people – parents of kids ages 0–15 who want to raise their kids with a healthy awareness of our world. We view YourGlobalFamily as a place where cultures and parenting intersect. And we’re writing with that audience in mind.
Parents are busy. I know, I am one, but my kids are now young adults so time has changed for me. But I so remember where I once was and how often I felt I was barely able to come up for air!
We want to be that breath of fresh air parents can take to help guide them along the way to raising awesome, globally minded kids! And we realize those gulps you take need to be easy to grab.
If you are not a parent of 0-15-ers but you’re a grandparent, aunt/uncle, educator or community organizer, you’ll find plenty here, too. And if you’re none of the above but simply love international cultures, we’ll get stuff out from time to time to stoke that interest, for sure!
Who can benefit?
You can be anywhere in the world and benefit from the ideas we have put forth so far and will continue to do so. You don’t have to be an American. As long as you can follow along in English, we want to be here for you.
I once added a translation assistant plugin on our previous site, CultureWeave. It looked fine and sported so many languages. Boom – all of a sudden my site was in Korean...or Arabic...or Spanish!
But, being fluent in another language (Japanese) myself, and having been trained as a translator and interpreter (in a past life, kinda!), I realize the intricacies of language. Yes, machine translation can help. But it frequently leads to awkward phrases and often complete meaning errors. I didn’t want to go there.
Perhaps, someday, we’ll have a team who can do real translation and interpretation of our materials. But for now, we’ll stick with the language we know – English – even though I know that limits our audience.
Rolling out the change
Of course, change does not happen overnight. I sure wish it could, but most changes in our lives happen over time. You won’t see all the changes above immediately, but you will see them within the coming six months. I’m committed to that!
So stick around and grow with us. Give your feedback and let’s make YourGlobalFamily an awesome place on the internet (and sometimes in real life!) for interaction, dialogue, learning, personal growth and of course community. We’ll be moving more in that direction in the coming months as well.
To a grander future!
